This is a period of transition and revolution where France wanted breaking from the past, the Ancien Régime, the old aristocracy with its obsolete and now meaningless tradition – especially in the light of the coming Enlightenment.
The ten year period between 1789 and 1799 was marked by struggle, blood, terror, change, political attempts and new constitutions: in short, to fight for individual freedom. But some of the people didn’t accept so often the new ideals, especially farmers, those who lived away from marketplace and large cities, those ones who remained attached to their traditions, customs and beliefs and to their own church.
